Contrary to popular belief, if handled properly, US-Sino relations finally has the possibility to improve. The key chapters on Japan, Taiwan, and United States, were written in a fashion that elaborates this fragility. Worth a read if you have basic/intermediate-level knowledge about China.Not a bad book but it can, occasionally, seem a little hysterical. They need to prevent to be seen as weak by the Chinese population, which may cause China to behave rashly when confronted with a conflict with Taiwan, Japan or the United States.you know how in grad school whenever the professor starts discussing theoretical frameworks someone always jumps in with a personal anecdote that is slightly related to the discussion but not really, it's more of a cry for attention? The best book written by an American scholar for understanding Chinese history and politics.A brilliant account of the current state of the PRC.

Granted that this book is about contemporary politics, not history, but in backgrounding the Taiwan issue, she didn't even mention the civil war, which certainly made me question her credibility.This book is worth reading. The discussions on Japan and Taiwan both have the US in the background, which is the ultimate superpower the China needs to worry about. The author's status as a former diplomat means that she has firsthand knowledge of how the Chinese government does things that very few Americans would otherwise have access to. My only quibble is, and maybe (likely) I'm biased, but I think Shirk kind of gave short shrift to the pro-independence argument for Taiwan.

There are a lot of ifs, ands, maybes, and buts in this analysis but that China is unstable and tottering cannot be beyond a doubt.This book is very politically oriented.

Nothing new to see here!Thank goodness we have people like Susan helping us understand the true nature of this massive nation. This whole book reads like that.
