The Kappa Child

Kappa are said to be about the size of a small child (never more than 5 feet tall) and have relatively small frames. "Despite a dearth of both water and love, the family discovers, through sorrow and fear, the green kiss of the Kappa Child, a mythical creature who blesses those who can imagine its magic"--Jacket. They are typically depicted as green, human-like beings with webbed hands and feet and a turtle-like carapaceon their backs.

I am a big fan of magical realism and thus was really looking forward to reading this book. This experience, she says, continues to be a source of inspiration in her writing.

Sunburst Award Nomination for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, 2002In a family not at all reminiscent of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie, four Japanese-Canadian sisters struggle to escape the bonds of a family and landscape as inhospitable as the sweltering prairie heat. it tries to span all these years of the main character (whose name we never learn, which irritates me)'s life, from her childhood with her sisters, abusive father, and mother on a farm in alberta, to her adulthood when she has a strange pregnancy and also having weird issues with her two best friends and has a job finding stray shopping carts. I don't know.

The author is Japanese Canadian lesbian and I was given the esteemed honor of (almost) meeting her during Madison's annual Wiscon Feminist Science Fiction convention.
But the worlds couldn’t be any more different, with her father’s dream of growing rice rather than something that would actually flourish. I don't know. I could do without it. In this case, the main character may actually be pregnant with a kappa, or maybe not. . I have never took this much time to read a book of such length but it was necessary. Amazon calculates a product’s star ratings based on a machine learned model instead of a raw data average. So I'm guessing this is some kind of trend in the sci-fi/fantasy genre these days.

While this would seem to make me predisposed to "Kappa Child," it is actually the opposite. ;)This has to be one of my favorite books ever.

Surprisingly upbeat, considering that it deals with the baggage of coming from an abusive home. Father is abusive, addicted to nasal spray and deluded about wanting to grow Japanese rice in the Canadian prairies. The writing was beautiful, but the plot was a mess of things with very little resolution.

It only gets weirder from there.

Hiromi Goto’s The Kappa Child depicts the story of an unnamed narrator as she dreams her way through the hardships of domestic violence, racism, and sexual orientation while growing up in a homogenous prairie society. This is one of those kinds of books. Contemporary young adult literature has often led the way in depicting the real-life issues facing teens from all backgrounds. But where "The Water of Possibility" combined Japanese folklore with a tiny Canadian village in an innocent childish way, "The Kappa Child" is a grown up book dealing with adult themes of sex, brutality and isolation, as well as love and redemption.
