For me David Byrne is a genius and will undoubtedly, when the history books are written, be regarded as one of the most important and brilliant musicians of the 20th century. The occasion, the chance to write interludes -- or "knee plays" -- for a large scale Robert Wilson opera, The Civil Wars, called on this kind of approach, Wilson being as detached as Byrne. As other reviewers, especially Vaughan and Michael (thanks, guys), have well noted, this music is beautifully crafted.
