He was such an interesting and unusual man it is easy to see why there have been more books written about him than any man who ever lived! "With Malice..." does this very well. . Readable and gives good flavour of both the times and man. Because of that, it took me several months to read it and at times I could only read about 15 minutes before needing to put it down. However, upon beginning my read I forgot entirely about my prior reservations and devoured the book as quickly as I was able aroWhen I initially picked up this book I was intimidated - I have read biographies in the past and enjoyed them but not only was Oates' volume big but it was also filled with very small print and was not broken into chapters so much as it was simply as many words as could be fit on every page in a constant stream of information, sometimes broken up by a small page break. You are past page 200 before Lincoln is elected to his first Term, so there is a lot of material on his early life and work in politics. Lincoln is one of my heroes, and this is the only biography of his that I actually enjoyed. Saw the book in the visitor centre at the Lincoln Home in Springfield, Illinois More than any other biographer, Stephen B. Oates brings the plain-talking man from Illinois to life as a canny politician, a doting husband, and a determined wartime leader. This gave me an insight into Lincoln that made me appreciate him even more. I was looking for a good, comprehensive biography of Abraham Lincoln's life. Mr. Oates has a flair for compelling drama. This is a fantastic history book. I loved seeing him in the light of a real human, from his humble upbringing, through trial after trial, and failure after failure. The subject matter of course covered Lincoln's childhood and early life, his early career as a lawyer and politician, the political climate of the US leading up to the war, slavery, Lincoln's presidential campaign, the long, drawn-out war, the Emancipation Proclamation, the end of the war and Lincoln's death. A great biography, wouldn't be without it. For it was “an old true maxim,” Lincoln contended, “that a drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall.” But if you assailed, damned, and vilified the misled, they would shut you off and lash back.”“The legitimate object of government,” he later asserted, “is ‘to do for the people what needs to be done, but which they can not, by individual effort, do at all, or do so well, for themselves.” Well, having previously read a shorter book about Lincoln by Stephen Oates, I felt safe choosing this one. This book is an absolute masterpiece, if you want the Lincoln story in all its aspects, do yourself a favour and buy this book. Oates details personal relationships from Lincoln's early years, how he strikes out on his own, how he educates himself and with tremendous self-motivating hard work transforms himself from a unschooled fence rail splitter to a well regarded lawyer "on the circuit." He was once marketed in a campaign as “Honest Abe,” but it seems to me he could’ve also been known as “a man in whom there is no guile.” He was such a good-hearted man, and though Oates makes it clear he had flaws, it was Lincoln’s willingness to look past the flaws of both friends and foes alike, and see good in them, that most impressed me about him.
