Memory & Motivation Board
Almost as soon as I moved into my new apartment back in March, I imagined having a big board above my desk with all my photos and post cards and trinkets from my life and travels. I finally had the opportunity to put together what I am calling my Memory & Motivation Board. Since it is a collection of so many fond travel memories, good friends, special moments, and also contains motivational phrases, I thought that was a more suitable name than what most call a vision board.
In my initial attempt, I hung cork directly on the wall (photo below). But it was too thin to hold any pins, and was for sure going to rip away from the nails. The better option turned out to be foam board. Foam board also allowed me to layer the content in a more unique way.
What I did first, was write several positive messages and words on all four of the boards (they don’t make foam board as big as I wanted). I then measured the space, marked where to hang and nailed the boards to the wall. You can see I used a special washer with a super small whole so that the board wouldn’t pop off of the nail.
I had already cut out some fashion styles I like out of my magazines and also travel destinations I have either been to or want to go to. I glued these cutouts directly on the board and in various locations. I debated having a more feng shui approach and sectioning the topics per board, but I ended up choosing a more free-flow of images.
Once the glued cut-outs were dry, I started pinning my photos and postcards all over the place. If they went over the glued sections, no problem. I want the board to feel layered and ultimately, I know what’s underneath. On top of the pictures and post cards, I placed motivational headlines or inspiring words and phrases which I also cut out of the magazines. Then I added some trinkets like key chains and little felt toys made for me by my Japanese students.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the way this came out. It is so visually interesting and colorful. It has morphed into an art piece, really. And I plan to keep adding to it. Ticket stubs, fashion cut outs, interior decor ideas, business advice, motivational messages, new photos, etc. When I look at this board, I feel very powerful. My whole life sits before me and I can see everywhere I have been and all that I have accomplished. Looking at my board, so many fantastic memories are stirred up every day and I feel inspired to continue to create a life as exciting and fulfilling as what is staring back at me.
Have you created a memory or vision board for yourself? If you were to create one, where in your house or office would you put it? What would you pin to it? Share your thoughts and photos in the comments!
